Wendy Sherman Associates, Inc. was founded in 1999. With a unique perspective on the publishing process, and an invaluable blend of experience in editorial, acquisitions, sales, marketing, and negotiations, the agency offers its clients a comprehensive strategy towards the development of material, the sale of books, as well as a collaborative participation in the entire publishing process. We pride ourselves on an outstanding reputation with publishers and the cultivation of long-term relationships with our clients.

The agency has had remarkable success in selling quality writing to the best editors and publishers in the business. We boasts a roster of literary fiction that includes Nani Power, whose Crawling at Night was cited as a NYTimes Notable; Howard Bahr, author of Judas Field, whose novels The Black Flower and The Year of Jubilo were also NYTimes Notables; Schopenhauer's Telescope by Gerard Donovan was a finalist for Booker Prize in 2003. Our success includes representation of best-selling legal suspense writer William Lashner, beloved actress Rue McClanahan, whose memoir My First Five Husbands…and the Ones That Got Away was published in April, and the recent literary phenomenon Kockroach by Tyler Knox.

Our ability to attract and identify quality material is combined with an intuitive and experiential sense of market trends. We have a proven track record with first time authors as well as those with established careers. Our reputation for professionalism and success, a passion for what we do, and accessibility to our clients ultimately makes us a desirable agency for writers throughout their writing careers. Our experience gives our clients a significant edge in the increasingly competitive publishing marketplace.

We negotiate the sale of all rights for our clients' book projects. We work with our international rights agent here in NYC as well as with sub agents and publishers abroad. We work with the best co-agents in New York and Los Angeles for the sale of film and television rights, each one selected for their experience and enthusiasm, and 'fit' for the particular project. We may, on occasion, recommend our clients work directly with freelance and independent editors. We never charge a reading fee, and are proud to be a member of the AAR.

Wendy Sherman is particularly interested in fiction with a strong voice and unique perspective. She loves quality women's fiction -- whether literary or with more commercial appeal. The essential elements are that the language is distinctive and the storytelling is captivating. Mainstream commercial fiction, literary fiction, upmarket women's fiction, and African-American fiction are strong categories for us.

In non-fiction we love anything with a truly unique idea and a strong platform. Narrative non-fiction, memoir, practical and prescriptive, self-help and mainstream psychology are general areas of interest as well as books about important social issues. Books that show us how to live life in a better way - that inform and enlighten us -- are always of interest.

Michelle Brower is interested in books that showcase a different and quirky worldview. She would like to pursue projects in pop culture, music, humor, and memoir, and is also interested in crafting how-to's. In fiction, she is drawn to a distinctive voice and a strong story.

Emmanuelle Alspaugh is looking for irresistible literary and commercial fiction, including romance, plus nonfiction in the areas of memoir, biography, journalism, history, business, and travel. A story told in a strong and specific voice, with characters so real that she feels like she's met them, will always grab her attention. On vacation she's equally likely to be reading Middlesex or Middlemarch, and some of her special favorites are Watership Down, The Glass Castle, and A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. In nonfiction, she looks for well-rounded proposals with sample chapters that include anecdotes to illustrate the author's points.

What we are not looking for includes genre fiction such as mystery, fantasy and science fiction. We do not handle children's books. We do not handle screenplays.
