Monday night, we attended the Books For a Better Life Awards, sponsored by the National MS Society at the elegant New York Times Center. Had a wonderful time with our own finalist Claire Bidwell Smith and her Penguin team – the fabulous editor Denise Roy and publicist extraordinaire Liz Kennan – plus a room full of friends and colleagues. Claire’s extraordinary memoir The Rules of Inheritance didn’t take the prize, but we congratulate Will Schwalbe for winning the inspirational memoir category for The End of Your Life Book Club. Meredith Vieira was back as host and Gail Sheehy (introduced by none other than Tom Wolfe) gave a warm and inspiring speech about her late husband, the legendary Clay Felker. Win or lose, you win.
